D1 vehicle guide
What Can You Drive with a D1 Licence?
A D1 licence is built around minibuses and mid-sized passenger vehicles. The core limits are passenger seats, vehicle length and trailer weight. This page helps you connect the legal category with real-world vehicles used by schools, taxi firms, charities, care homes, clubs and passenger transport operators.
- Minibuses
- 9 to 16 passenger seats
- 8m maximum length
- Trailer up to 750kg

Common vehicles in the D1 category
D1 is commonly linked to minibuses, shuttle vehicles and passenger vans that have more seats than an ordinary car-based journey but are smaller than a full-size bus.
The passenger-seat count matters. If the vehicle has more than 16 passenger seats, D1 is not the right category.
Examples of D1 use
A D1 vehicle might be used for airport transfers, school trips, SEN routes, community transport, hotel shuttles, sports fixtures, care home outings or workplace transport.
The same vehicle can carry different legal duties depending on whether it is used privately, commercially, under a permit, as private hire or as a passenger transport service.
- 9 to 16 passenger seat minibuses
- Private hire and airport transfer minibuses
- School, college and SEN minibuses
