Why towing comes up with D1

Minibus users sometimes need to carry luggage, sports equipment, event kit or accessibility equipment. A light trailer can help, but the licence and weight limits still need checking.

The D1 trailer allowance is up to 750kg, so do not assume a larger trailer is covered.

Training considerations

Towing changes braking distance, positioning, reversing, turning and route planning. Even where the entitlement fits, drivers should be confident before carrying passengers and equipment together.

Who this is for

  • Sports clubs
  • Schools and colleges
  • Event shuttle teams
  • Charities
  • Community transport groups
  • Minibus drivers carrying kit

What training focuses on

  • Trailer weight checks
  • Vehicle and trailer awareness
  • Planning wider turns
  • Smooth braking
  • Passenger and equipment safety
