Rules
D1 Licence Requirements
D1 requirements are about both the vehicle and the driver: passenger seats, vehicle length, trailer limit, medical fitness, theory, practical testing and intended use.
- D1 minibus guidance
- North West training context
- Practical next steps

Plain-English D1 guidance
Written for learners comparing minibus, PCV, taxi, school, care and community transport requirements.
Linked to practical training
Each guide connects the rule or question to the medical, theory, practical training, 3A and 3B test pathway.
North West context
Advice is framed around learners using Wigan and Chorley depots, with arrangements confirmed around availability.
Vehicle requirements
GOV.UK describes D1 as vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres and a trailer up to 750kg.
That definition is the starting point. If the vehicle has more passenger seats or a heavier trailer, you should check a different entitlement before driving.
Driver and use requirements
A driver may need medical checks, provisional entitlement, theory tests and practical tests. Professional use can also raise Driver CPC, PSV operator licensing, private hire licensing or minibus permit questions.
- Medical stage
- Licence application support
- Theory tests
- Practical D1 training
- 3A and 3B tests
- CPC or permit checks where relevant
